Finished Anecdotes of Dogs (1868). The book argued that dogs are pretty smart (and people should be nice to them). It had some accounts of dogs spelling any of about 50 words, playing dominoes, sensing malicious intent toward their master, finding objects by name, and so forth. And of course, dogs are loyal.

The book detailed some of the breeds at that time (many of which probably go back hundreds (or thousands?) of years). New to me was the Turnspit -- a dog bred to operate some sort of mechanism to rotate food over a fire. Apparently, if you cook every day, you'll want two dogs, otherwise you'll wear out their patience.

Notably, I didn't see the Dachshund mentioned.
